Obituary of Mark G. McElwee
Mark G. McElwee , 78 of Fairview Village, passed away November 16, 2024. He was born May 3, 1946, to the late Alfred Gilbert and Evelyn McElwee of Lafeyette Hill. He was the younger brother to David McElwee (Mary). He is predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years Christine McElwee. They are both survived by their three children, Mark Jr. (Rebecca and their daughter Fiona Glenanne), Kit (Rich) and Cassandra. Mark was a graduate of LaSalle High School and LaSalle College. He set many team, pool and national records in swimming which would lead to his induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020 at LaSalle University. He spent 33 years teaching English and film for the Methacton School District while also being an integral part of the Suburban Aquatic League since its inception in 1968-69. He most recently served as the league’s registrar after decades of coaching the Methacton Boys Team. When he retired from teaching, he could be found as a PIAA High School Swinmming Official or collecting tickets at the gate for a Methacton High School Football game and during the summers he would collect tickets for the bumper cars as he worked at Playland’s Castaway Cove on the Ocean City NJ boardwalk. He also had a career as a pool lifeguard and managed several swimming clubs to include Center Square, Whitpain Green and Markley Farms where he would spend the bulk of his years. Mark even met his wife Christine while lifeguarding at the Fourth Street pool in Lansdale, Pa. Mark lived a full life as a caring and loving husband, a father and a wonderful grandfather (Opa) to his only grandchild, little Fiona Glenanne McElwee or LFG! So as you remember “Mr. Mac,” always be selfish on your birthday, break out the French toast for the snow days and always remember to drink the champagne. Love never dies.
